No Weapons Expo, No Warships – 2016

Let’s stand together for peace & oppose the Weapons Expo and warship visit!

As we know from the Kiwisaver failures, despite living in a (relatively) peaceful country, we are still connected to the business of war. But it’s not just Kiwisaver. Despite the government admitting in the recent Defence White Paper that we are facing ‘no direct military threat’, they have committed $20 billion towards military forces over the next 20 years. Why? War is big business. In Aotearoa – New Zealand, this business takes place at the annual NZ Defence Industry Association Weapons Expo. The Expo gives arms dealers, the military and government organisations the chance to schmooze, check out the latest weapon technology & broker deals.

This year Peace Action Wellington joins with Auckland Peace Action to organise the growing public opposition to the November warships gala and the Weapons Expo. We will stand together for peace in our two biggest cities and we invite everyone to join us.

Te Whanganui-a-Tara – Wellington

The Weapons Expo was been held in Te Whanganui-a-Tara – Wellington for many years, including last year, when 27 protesters were arrested for non-violently opposing the Weapons Expo. The Weapons Expo is set to return in 2017. We need to let the NZ Defence Industry Association know that Te Whanganui-a-Tara – Wellington is a peace city, our opposition to the weapons industry is growing and we don’t want them back. We will be taking action in the city during the time of the Weapons Expo to make this clear.

Peace Action Wellington will also be holding stalls, actions and raising awareness of the Aotearoa – New Zealand arms industry in the leadup to the Expo. War starts here, so we have to stop it here. If you want to get involved, get in touch!
